Heating engineer testing a wall-mounted boiler with a flue gas analyser

How long does a boiler service take?

A standard annual service on a gas combi boiler usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Older boilers, system boilers with a cylinder, or a boiler that turns up a problem can take a little longer.

What happens during a boiler service

The engineer checks the boiler is running safely and efficiently, then cleans and tests the parts that wear over time.

  • Visual check of the boiler, flue and pipework
  • Removing the casing to inspect the burner, heat exchanger and seals
  • Flue gas analysis to check combustion and carbon monoxide levels
  • Testing gas pressure, safety devices and controls
  • Checking system pressure and the expansion vessel
  • Written record of what was checked and anything found

What can make it take longer

If the boiler is hard to reach, has not been serviced for several years, or needs a part cleaning or replacing, allow extra time. Oil boilers also take longer than gas, as the nozzle and filter are usually changed as part of the service.

Why service every year

Most manufacturers, including Worcester, require an annual service to keep the warranty valid. A yearly check also catches small faults before they turn into a breakdown in the middle of winter, and it keeps the boiler burning fuel efficiently.

How to get ready

Clear the area around the boiler so the engineer can get to it easily, and have your warranty details or last service record to hand. Let us know about any noises, leaks or error codes you have noticed so we can look at them while we are there.
