Plumber holding a new rubber washer next to a dripping chrome kitchen tap

How to fix a leaking tap

A tap that drips once a second can waste thousands of litres of water a year. The good news is that most leaking taps come down to one worn part, and you can usually replace it with a few basic tools.

Work out what type of tap you have

If the handle turns several times before the water stops, you have a traditional compression tap with a rubber washer. If it turns only a quarter or half turn, or it is a single lever mixer, it uses a ceramic disc cartridge.

Before you start

  • Turn off the water supply to the tap, either at the isolation valve under the sink or at the stop tap
  • Open the tap to drain any water left in the pipe
  • Put the plug in so small parts cannot fall down the drain
  • Have an adjustable spanner, a screwdriver and the replacement part ready

Replacing a washer or cartridge

Prise off the cap on the handle, undo the screw and lift the handle away. Use a spanner to undo the headgear or cartridge, holding the tap body steady with your other hand so you do not twist it.

On a compression tap, swap the old washer for a new one of the same size. On a ceramic tap, take the old cartridge to a plumbers merchant so you can match it exactly. Refit everything in reverse order, turn the water back on and test.

When to call a plumber

If the tap still drips after a new washer or cartridge, the seat inside the tap body may be worn, or water may be leaking from the base or the pipework beneath. That is the point to call us, and sometimes replacing the whole tap is the better option.
